I ?was out riding the back roads on the scooter the other day in Quartzsite Az. The old Honda Elite 150 scooter is tough as nails and as dependable as… well, a Honda.
I came across this “gate” and got some good pics to show you all. These gates are very common. My thoughts is that the gate is seemingly wide open to all traffic but upon closer inspection, hooved animals may not be able to walk through due to the deep troughs on the ground. Have a look and see what you think.
Those are cow guards Don....designed to keep cattle out for a stroll off the highways!!
ReplyDeleteThe assumption is that cows can't walk on the metal grate then? They could jump it pretty easthough. Cows really are dumb if that keeps them penned up!

ReplyDeleteI'd hate to see one with a hoof stuck in that grate! But yeah cows seem to be rather easy to outsmart that way.
ReplyDeleteYepsters - cattle guards. And I don't think the poor bovine are so much dumb as they are paranoid. Apparently they only like tierra firma under their hooves. A study was done at A&M years ago that shows you could also put sturdy, solid plexi-glass over a trench and they won't walk on it either because they can see through it. Who knows, maybe they have a fear of heights.
ReplyDelete@Maria - believe it or not, they are engineered to the nth degree so that even calves don't slip through.
Don - next thing I know you'll be showing us a picture of "bumper gates" and asking what they are. LOL. Note - don't try one on your scooter. :)
And yes, grew up on a farm - even used to slop the hogs and ride a horse to school. And nope, not kidding. ;)
